GPSF Grad Games 2013

The 4th annual UNC GPSF Grad Games is fast approaching! Come meet and mingle with current and incoming graduate students from across the University while competing in a series of fun events. Socials will follow each day’s event and daily prizes will be awarded! Sign up now by emailing – must sign up by Friday Aug 9th to participate in Monday through Wednesday’s events. If you want to create a specific team, please designate a ‘team captain’ and email with the names AND emails of students on your team. If you don’t have a team, don’t worry! We’ll pair you with a team.

Students are automatically charged for Student Blue Health Insurance!

The UNC System requires that eligible students must have health insurance. You may be covered under your own insurance plan or you may choose to enroll in the UNC System’s Student Health Insurance Plan, Student Blue from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina. To waive out of the Student Blue Insurance, follow the instructions below:

  • Visit
  • Choose UNC Chapel Hill from the dropdown menu
  • Click on the Waiver Option in the left hand menu
  • Click the Proceed to mandatory enroll/waive button on the page. If you are an international student, click on the blue words that say this form above the enroll/waive button.

Does your Department have a GPSF Senator?

Each degree-granting program is eligible to send a representative to the GPSF Senate, which is the main graduate student legislative body, granting monetary allocations, approving appropriations for events, overseeing travel awards, and enacting resolutions. To be eligible for allocations through GPSF, your department should designate a representative. Want to find out if your department does for 2013-14? See the GPSF Senate page for more information.

GPSF External Appointments

Apply for a GPSF external appointment position! These appointments offer the opportunity to make direct contributions to University policy, increase the visibility and voice of Graduate and Professional Students and gain relevant experience in academia with a low time commitment. For more information on committees that need representatives please visit the Get Involved link on our website.

Park and Ride Fee Information

Per the UNC Department of Public Safety’s 5-year Transportation Plan, passes to park at UNC Park and Ride lots, located at the Friday Center, Hedrick Bldg., Hwy. 54, Chatham, Franklin St. and 725 MLK, will no longer be available free of charge to commuters though the Commuter Alternative Program (CAP). Parking at these Park and Ride lots will now cost $227 for students. For more information about this fee and what you can do to offset the cost, please see our GradAlert! page.

Please refer to the GPSD Events website for upcoming events in the month of August. Events and resources are announced through the GPSD listserv. Join the Graduate Student Professional Development list by sending an e-mail to with “subscribe gradevelopment” in the body of the message, leaving the subject field blank.

Cyclicious Event Aug 20th

Come out to the Pit Tuesday August 20th from 11am-2pm. Get your bike tuned up and air in your tires! Learn new bike routes and enter to win $400 in bike gear. Check out Cyclicious!

Refugee Health Initiative (RHI)

Are you interested in working with refugees? Are you interested in helping people access healthcare and health information? The Refugee Health Initiative is a professional student health organization that matches student volunteers with newly resettled refugees to help them establish a medical care home and provide them with basic health information. There are also opportunities to participate in one-time community outreach events. If you are interested in volunteering or would like more information, please attend one of our informational sessions!

Newsletter Schedule & Deadlines

The GPSF Newsletter is published on the 1st and 15th of each month. To publish an announcement on the 1st, the announcement must be sent in by the 28th. To be published on the 15th, it must be sent in by the 12th. During the summer, the newsletter is published once a month on the 1st. Send announcements (no more than 100-150 words, please) to
